Circle Of Security

🔹 What Is Circle of Security Parenting (COSP)?

Circle of Security Parenting is a structured 8-week course that helps adults understand and respond to their child’s emotional needs in ways that promote secure attachment — the foundation for healthy emotional and social development.

It focuses on the idea that children need both a safe haven and a secure base:

  • A safe haven to return to for comfort and security.

  • A secure base to explore the world from.

🔹 Who Might Need or Benefit from COSP?

COSP is for:

  • Parents or caregivers of children from birth to age 12 (especially toddlers and preschoolers).

  • Foster parents, adoptive parents, grandparents, and even childcare professionals.

  • Caregivers who feel stuck in repetitive behavior patterns with their child.

  • Those who want to improve their child’s emotional resilience, trust, and behavior.

  • Anyone struggling with:

    • Tantrums or clinginess

    • Behavior that seems confusing or frustrating

    • Feeling overwhelmed, guilty, or unsure about parenting choices

It’s also especially beneficial for:

  • Families healing from trauma or generational patterns.

  • Parents seeking gentle, emotionally attuned approaches rather than strict discipline systems.

🔹 How Does It Work?

Format:

  • Typically an 8-week group class, 1–2 hours per session.

  • Led by a certified facilitator.

  • Uses videos, group discussion, personal reflection, and guided materials.

  • Not therapy — but often described as “therapeutic.”

Key Concepts Taught:

  1. Understanding your child’s needs — recognizing when they need support, comfort, or freedom to explore.

  2. “Being with” your child — emotionally attuning, not fixing or ignoring.

  3. Shark music — identifying your own emotional triggers and how your past experiences affect your parenting.

  4. Repair, not perfection — learning how to rebuild trust after missteps.

  5. Secure attachment — the goal isn’t to be a perfect parent, but a "good enough" one who helps children feel safe and understood.

🔹 What’s the Impact?

Studies and anecdotal evidence show COSP helps caregivers:

  • Understand their child’s emotional world more deeply.

  • Feel less frustrated and more confident.

  • Respond to challenging behaviors with empathy and structure.

  • Break cycles of yelling, avoidance, or guilt.

  • Strengthen connection, even in tough moments.

  • Raise kids who:

    • Feel safer

    • Have better emotional regulation

    • Are more socially confident

    • Can explore the world with independence

🔹 Why Is It Worth Taking?

Because:

  • It teaches lifelong parenting skills that grow with your child.

  • It gives you tools to handle stress and improve communication.

  • It’s evidence-based and gentle — no shame, blame, or judgment.

  • It fosters resilience — both in you and your child.

  • It’s about connection, not control.

Even seasoned parents often say:

“I wish I had learned this earlier.”

🔹 Additional Insights:

  • Circle of Security Parenting (COSP) is not therapy, but many caregivers find it deeply healing and transformative.

  • It’s non-judgmental, evidence-based, and focused on building lasting connection, not control.

  • COSP is used in settings ranging from family support services to early childhood education, mental health, and foster care.

  • Cost: The full 8-week course is $300.

However, limited scholarships are available to help offset the cost for those who qualify.
